The Nikon TC-16A AF Teleconverter 1.6x is an interesting piece of equipment. At its most basic, it is a 1.6x teleconverter that multiplies both the focal length and aperture of a lens by a factor of 1.6. For example, this would convert a 100mm f2.8 lens into a 160mm f4.5. In this sense, this teleconverter is an inexpensive, versatile and compact way of carrying around the capability of turning a lens into something more telephoto - all without having to carry big, heavy and expensive telephoto lenses. But the TC-16A AF Teleconverter also is able to add autofocus capabilities to manual focus lenses in some specific cases. This teleconverter was originally meant to be paired with the Nikon F3AF and its DX-1 finder. When used in conjunction with these items, the optics in the TC-16A were capable of moving and thereby adjusting focus for the manual focus lens mounted on the teleconverter. This TC-16A theoretically will work (as in autofocus manual focus lenses) with the Nikon F4, F6, N2020 and N90s, among some others. But there are also several Nikon AF cameras this will not work with, such as the N4004 and F100, to name a couple.
